Footsteps came into the bathroom and I held my breath, not trusting myself to be quiet enough when I was drawing air into my lungs. When a dragon, or caretaker, or whatever they were called appeared less than a foot away from me I felt an odd calmness surround me. It was one of the most beautiful ones I’d ever seen. The scaled that ran down the center of its back were blues and greens while yellows and browns ran down its sides and over its rump. The thing reminded me of a peacock more than anything else. It had a tail as well, so part of me expected it to fan it somehow and show me that peacocks and dragons were related. It didn’t.

I could see the shadow of a male form cast over the shower and waited for him to come closer, to look for me in the only obvious hiding space in the bathroom, but he didn’t, instead he turned away. My eyes locked onto the dragon in front of me, no longer interested in the men in my apartment. Not that I wasn’t aware of every move that they made, but I had never been this close to one of the dragons before, and it made me both scared and excited. The creature had spread its wings at some point, and the telltale eye of a peacock feather was visible on the leathery skin. It looked like it had two extra eyes on each side, as well as the ones on its head. I was fascinated and knew I would have to draw it as soon as I got to a notebook, provided I made it through the night first.

“Find her?” the angry one grunted.

“Nah, she must have left,” the calm one said.

“Can I help you boys with something?” Griff’s voice crackled with power as it rolled toward me. It reminded me strangely of wood snapping and popping on a fire, both dangerous and soothing at the same time.

“Doesn’t look like their type of place does it?” Dres’s voice added, flowing toward me like a summer breeze, easy and care free yet full of malice. At least I knew the easy and care free part was a façade, the malice was unexpected though. Apparently, there was a dark streak running through the gentle, quiet man I’d met for dinner earlier.

“Think your so much better than us because you have your own bodies, don’t you? You’re still demons, and the humans will never accept you as equal. Ours is the only way to have control over this world.” The angry one was getting riled up all over again.

“Come on, you can either go home, or we can kill you. It’s your choice, we aren’t here to debate the ethics of the fifth world or human beings with you. You’ve broken the accords and now you need to return to whichever world you came from,” Finn’s voice carried toward me like the roar of the ocean and my heart leapt in hope.
